Jonathan Marchessault, one of the remaining six original members of the Vegas Golden Knights, has clinched the Conn Smythe Trophy, marking him as the MVP of the 2023 NHL playoffs. Marchessault had tied the playoff with 13 goals and trailed only his teammate Jack Eichel, finishing with 25 points.
Initially, with only two assists in the first seven playoff matches, Marchessault was far from being a contender for the Conn Smythe Trophy. However, he suddenly started accumulating points at an astounding rate. Over the following 15 games, Marchessault netted 13 goals and made 10 assists.
During the Stanley Cup Final itself, Marchessault racked up four goals and four assists, decisively outplaying the Panthers and cementing his claim for the Conn Smythe Trophy.
Marchessault’s achievement was even more noteworthy given that he was undrafted from junior hockey and won the trophy after triumphing over his former team in the Stanley Cup Final. Marchessault had played for the Panthers in the 2016-17 season, contributing 51 points in 75 games.
Post that season, the Panthers made him available in the expansion draft, permitting the Golden Knights to pick him. Merely six years after, Marchessault exacted his revenge through an exceptional run in the playoffs, and particularly in the Stanley Cup Final.
