The Los Angeles Kings reaffirmed their status, notably through their captain Anze Kopitar who recently inked a two-year contract extension. This agreement would extend his tenure with the team to the 2025-26 season, marking Kopitar’s 20th year of service with the franchise.

The Kings broke the news on Thursday, stating that Kopitar has secured a two-year extension worth an impressive $14,000,000. The deal will commence upon the conclusion of his current contract at the close of the 2023-24 season.

Kopitar, turning 36 by the time the forthcoming season starts, remains one of the premier two-way centers in the league. The previous season saw him lead the Kings in scoring, delivering 74 points and earning a fifth-place finish in the Selke Trophy race.

In the official statement from the team, Kopitar expressed his intention to stay with the Kings, and assist the franchise in clinching its third Stanley Cup victory.

“My family and I have found a home in Los Angeles and I’m thrilled to extend my career here,” said Kopitar. “Having been a part of this organization through thick and thin, I believe we’re on the verge of something special. I eagerly anticipate helping our team elevate its game and strive for our ultimate aim: to win the Stanley Cup once more.”

Having assumed the captain’s role for the Kings since 2016, Kopitar played an instrumental part in their Stanley Cup victories in 2012 and 2014. He led the league in goals (8), assists (12), and points (20) during the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs. In 2014, Kopitar was the leading scorer in the postseason with 21 assists and 26 points, securing the Cup for the second time in three years.

With Kopitar’s presence secured until the 2025-26 season, the stage is set for him to pursue at least one more Stanley Cup. Following a 104-point season and a noteworthy acquisition of Pierre Luc-Dubois from the Winnipeg Jets, the Kings are positioned as one of the favorites to clinch the Western Conference title next season.
