The New Jersey Devils have secured the future of one of their top young talents. On Thursday, the Devils announced the signing of star forward Jesper Bratt to a lucrative eight-year contract extension worth $63 million.
At 24 years old, Bratt was set to enter restricted free agency this summer, but the Devils were determined to keep him in their lineup for the long term. The new deal carries an average annual value (AAV) of $7.875 million, making Bratt the team’s third-highest paid player, trailing only defenseman Dougie Hamilton and center Jack Hughes.
General manager Tom Fitzgerald expressed his confidence in Bratt’s integral role in the team’s quest for a fourth Stanley Cup in a statement.
“Securing Jesper Bratt on a long-term contract was always a priority, and both parties are thrilled that we reached an agreement,” Fitzgerald stated. “I greatly appreciate Jesper’s commitment to our organization. We believe he is an exceptional player and a crucial member of our core talent group, contributing to our long-term success and our ultimate goal of bringing the Stanley Cup back to New Jersey.”
Selected in the sixth round of the 2016 NHL Draft by the Devils, Bratt has rapidly developed into one of the franchise’s brightest rising stars.
In the previous season, Bratt showcased his skills by netting 32 goals and providing 41 assists in 82 games. Although his postseason performance was slightly subdued, with only one goal in 12 games, his shooting percentage is expected to improve as his career progresses.
With Bratt’s future secured, the Devils can now shift their focus towards re-signing winger Timo Meier, who joined the team via a trade this past spring.
