Jonathan Marchessault, one of the few remaining original members of the Vegas Golden Knights, has clinched the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the 2023 NHL playoffs. Marchessault matched the top playoff tally with 13 goals, and he came in second only to fellow Golden Knight Jack Eichel in points, accumulating 25 in total.
Initially, Marchessault seemed to be far from contention for the Conn Smythe Trophy with a modest two assists in the first seven playoff matches. However, he soon surged forward, accruing an impressive tally of points. In the subsequent 15 games, Marchessault netted 13 goals and provided 10 assists.
In the Stanley Cup Final alone, he scored four goals and set up four more. Marchessault shone brightly against the Panthers, bolstering his claim for the Conn Smythe Trophy with a stellar performance.
Marchessault’s victory was made all the more remarkable given that he was overlooked in the junior hockey draft and triumphed against his former team in the Stanley Cup Final. He had a respectable run with the Panthers in the 2016-17 season, securing 51 points in 75 matches.
Subsequently, the Panthers left Marchessault unprotected in the expansion draft, allowing the Golden Knights to snap him up. Fast forward six years, and Marchessault made the most of this opportunity by delivering a brilliant performance throughout the playoffs and particularly in the Stanley Cup Final.
