Welcome to the NHL Star Power Index! This list measures how much attention some players in the NFL are getting. We want to make sure you know that being on this list isn’t always a good thing, it just means they’re the talk of the hockey world.
The players listed here aren’t ranked according to how much attention they’re getting – everyone is equal. We’ll check back in with the Star Power Index every week throughout the season!
Connor McDavid is having an incredible season. On Monday, in the Edmonton Oilers’ 5-4 victory against the Arizona Coyotes, he got an assist from his teammate Zach Hyman and that help gave him 140 points for this season! This makes him the 10th person ever to get 140 points or more in a single year, with Mario Lemieux being the last one who did it (161 points) back in 1995-1996.
McDavid recently became the seventh person ever to score 60 goals and make 80 assists in one season. Before McDavid, it was Lemieux that last reached that achievement.
Currently, McDavid’s 140 points is the ninth-most achieved by anyone in a single Oilers’ season. Wayne Gretzky is the eighth player to reach that amount of points, which he got in 1987-88.
Connor McDavid has the most points in the NHL with 143. The next closest players are Leon Draisaitl (116), Nikita Kucherov (104), David Pastrnak (98) and Matthew Tkachuk (97).
McDavid is playing really well for the Oilers and if he keeps it up, he’ll get a total of 156 points by the end of the regular season. His accomplishments will put him on thirteenth place in the NHL’s all-time list, while passing his teammate Gretzky who also appears on this list multiple times. He’ll become the eight best scorer not only in Oilers history, but overall in NHL history as well.
The Minnesota Wild are competing for first place in their division. This is largely due to their star winger Matt Boldy, who scored his third hat trick on Monday. He achieved this by scoring three goals against the Seattle Kraken within 50 seconds – helping the Wild achieve a 5-1 victory!
It’s really cool that 21-year-old Boldy scored three goals in one game for the second time in six games. That’s called a hat trick, which only Marian Gaborik did more of (5) as a 21 or younger player in the same team history.
Recently, Boldy has been on fire with nine goals in his last six games! Plus, his efforts have helped the Wild win five out of those six contests. He even managed to score more than one goal in three different games during this period.
In only his second year in the NHL, Boldy has already become a major goal scorer for the Wild. As the Wild try to win their very first Central Division title this season, it will be up to Boldy to keep putting goals on the scoreboard if Minnesota wants a chance of making that possible.
The Los Angeles Kings have been really successful recently. Before Tuesday’s loss, they had gone 12 games without losing and only lost two times during that period of time.
Kings forward Viktor Arvidsson has been having great games recently. He’s scored goals in 4 of his last 6 games, and he even got two goals in two different games this past weekend! On Sunday, Arvidsson scored both of his goals during the first period, helping the Kings to a 7-6 win against the Blues.
Arvidsson earned three points in just one period. He also helped out Alex Iafallo to get a goal during a power-play.
Arvidsson is doing incredibly well with the Kings! He’s tied for first in goals scored on the power play (9), third in total amount of goals scored (24), taken the fourth-most shots (202) and has the fifth-highest number of assists (29)! All these stats were achieved since he joined the Kings after a trade with the Predators earlier this year. Arvidsson is having a great impact on their offense.
Linus Ullmark has been playing great hockey this season and it’s like nothing can stop him. He is doing really well in the goal and helping his team win as they get closer to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Linus Ullmark has had an amazing season of 45 games so far, by getting 36 wins, 5 ties, and 1 loss. He also has a goals-against-average (GAA) of 1.92, a save percentage of .937, and 2 shutouts! Plus, in his last 3 games he only allowed one goal each and the team won; they even clinched the Atlantic Division title!
Over the last three games, Ullmark has been super-impressive, saving an incredible 87 out of 90 shots that have come his way. In a recent game against the Nashville Predators he stopped 21 out of the 22 shots that he faced, but unfortunately the team lost 2-1.
According to Money Puck, Ullmark is doing an amazing job this season with a .966 save percentage and 319 puck freezes. His goals-against-average has also been below 2.00 for the whole season, which makes it very likely for him to win the Vezina Trophy – an award given out to the best goaltender of the sport in that particular season!
