Oilers’ Connor McDavid Wins Hart Trophy as NHL MVP, Erik Karlsson Claims Norris Trophy

Edmonton Oilers’ superstar Connor McDavid was named the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) by capturing the Hart Trophy at the 2023 NHL Awards ceremony held on Monday. McDavid outperformed notable competitors such as David Pastrnak from the Boston Bruins and Matthew Tkachuk from the Florida Panthers to secure the prestigious award.

This is McDavid’s third time winning the Hart Trophy in his eight-year NHL career, previously claiming the honor in the 2016-17 and 2020-21 seasons. Notably, an Oilers player has now earned the MVP title in three of the past four seasons, with Leon Draisaitl winning it in the 2019-20 campaign and McDavid himself securing it in the 2020-21 season.

During the 2022-23 season, McDavid achieved a career-high of 153 points, comprising an impressive 64 goals and 89 assists. His point total was the highest recorded since Mario Lemieux’s outstanding 161 points in the 1995-96 season, showcasing McDavid’s exceptional performance.

McDavid also led the league in goals, assists, and ranked second in power-play goals with 21, trailing only his Oilers teammate Draisaitl. Prior to this season, McDavid’s highest point tally in a single season was 123, accomplished during the 2021-22 campaign.

Remarkably, after just eight seasons in the NHL, McDavid has already secured the fifth spot in franchise history for the most points with 850. He is trailing only legendary names like Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Mark Messier, and Glenn Anderson. Given his exceptional trajectory, it is likely that McDavid will surpass Messier next season, securing the third position on the Oilers’ all-time points list.
