Our main focus today is…

THE FLORIDA PANTHERS

Despite having been written off numerous times – when they seemed unlikely to make the playoffs, when they barely scraped into the postseason against the record-breaking Bruins, when they lost to the Bruins 3-1 in the first round, and most recently, when they fell behind the Golden Knights 2-1 in Game 3, down 2-0 in the series – the Panthers continue to defy expectations. Taking a leaf out of South Florida’s NBA team’s book, it’s clear that we should never underestimate this South Florida NHL team.

Matthew Tkachuk dramatically equalized with a 6-on-5 goal late in the game, and Carter Verhaeghe clinched the victory in overtime, helping Florida claw their way back from the brink of elimination to the heart of the action with a 3-2 triumph over Vegas.

The scoring started early on for the hosts thanks to Brandon Montour, although Mark Stone later levelled things up with a power play in the first period. Jonathan Marchessault gave Vegas the lead with another power play goal in the second period, making him just the third player to score a power-play goal in three consecutive Stanley Cup Final games. It seemed like his goal might be the deciding factor until Tkachuk slotted home a rebound 17:47 into the third period. His 11 postseason goals now represent a franchise record. After an important penalty kill at the start of overtime, Verhaeghe fired past Adin Hill to secure the Panthers’ first-ever Stanley Cup Final victory, following six losses.

As Chris Bengel notes, one particular star player deserves significant recognition for Florida’s perfect 7-0 record in overtime games this postseason.

Bengel points out: “Tkachuk is joining an elite group after scoring his fifth game-winning goal in the 2023 postseason. With the likes of Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy, and Jari Kurri, the Panthers’ star player is among several hockey legends to score five game-winning goals in one postseason. Given Tkachuk’s current performance in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs, climbing even higher in this list doesn’t seem out of reach.”

Florida aims to level the series in their next match.

In other news, Oklahoma softball has won yet another national championship. The No. 1-ranked Sooners defeated No. 3 Florida State 3-1 to complete a sweep in the Women’s College World Series finals. This marks their 53rd straight victory (a new all-time record) and their third successive national championship.

In football news, the Vikings are reportedly planning to release running back Dalvin Cook, which has long been anticipated. Despite his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl season in 2022, Cook’s lower rushing yards and high salary cap make his departure a logical decision for Minnesota.

Meanwhile, Manchester City is poised to win the treble for England this millennium if they can secure a victory in the UEFA Champions League final against Inter tomorrow in Istanbul.

In horse racing, the 155th Belmont Stakes, the final of the three Triple Crown races, is scheduled for this weekend, with the favorite Forte running out of the sixth post position.

Don’t miss out on the action this weekend, with a line-up including the Nuggets vs. Heat in NBA, the French Open finals, the Red Sox vs. Yankees in MLB, and more.
