The New York Rangers have confirmed Peter Laviolette as their new head coach in a recent announcement, replacing Gerard Gallant. This appointment designates Laviolette as the 37th head coach in the history of the Rangers. Gallant’s dismissal followed the conclusion of the 2022-23 season.
Chris Drury, the president and general manager of the Rangers, expressed his enthusiasm in a press statement: “We are delighted to welcome Peter as the future Head Coach of the New York Rangers. Given Peter’s vast experience and impressive track record as an NHL Head Coach, we look forward to the success that his leadership will bring to our team.”
Laviolette isn’t a stranger to the Rangers organization, having played 12 games with the team during the 1988-89 season.
Throughout his career, Laviolette has achieved a 752-503-150 record in 1,430 games as a head coach. At 58, Laviolette has held the position of head coach for the New York Islanders, Carolina Hurricanes, Philadelphia Flyers, Nashville Predators, and Washington Capitals. His contract with the Capitals, where he spent the past three seasons, ended after the 2022-23 season.
Laviolette holds the eighth position in all-time NHL coaching wins (752) and is the top-ranking head coach among those born in the United States. In the context of games coached, the seasoned coach also ranks 11th all-time.
In 21 seasons as an NHL head coach, Laviolette has guided his teams to the playoffs 12 times. His teams have reached the Stanley Cup Final thrice, clinching the trophy once with the Hurricanes in 2006.
The Rangers decided to let go of Gallant after only two seasons. Despite Gallant leading the Rangers to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in both seasons, the team fell in the opening round to the New Jersey Devils in 2023.
